Is Studypool Worth Your Time?

I recently stumbled upon a platform called Studypool, which is a tutoring platform that connects students to tutors. This platform is different from other tutoring platforms due to its bidding process.

What Is StudyPool?

  • Studypool is an online platform where students post academic questions and tutors bid to answer them.
  • It operates with “micro-tutoring” or Q&A style help, one question at a time rather than full courses or classes.
  • Tutors set their bids (price + turnaround time), and students choose whom to hire.
  • The platform charges a service fee (commission) on your earnings.
  • Studypool also allows uploading existing study materials or class notes for passive income (students download/view them) in some cases.

Studypool Application is Long

The Studypool application can take up to thirty minutes to complete. Fortunately, you can save and return if needed. You will see this before starting the application process:

Once you acknowledge, you’ll be asked to enter some personal information, and to verify your phone via via text message.

Next, you’ll be directed to pick a topic, watch a video, and to provide a writing sample about the video. This part is a little bit of a pain in the neck. I sat through a TedTalk of a person rambling and talking in circles and had to write about it. And if you’re thinking of using AI to write, DON’T! Studypool has a plagiarism and AI detector to filter out these types of submissions.

The essay requirements are as follows:

I’m currently in the process of editing the essay in hopes of completing my application.

How Much Can You Really Make?

  • StudyPool claims that top tutors can make up to $7,500/month. This number is likely an outlier and represents the VERY top earners, who are probably few in numbers.
  • But realistic earnings will vary depending on:
    • Subject matter and academic level (graduate-level problems typically pay more)
    • Your speed, accuracy, and turnaround time
    • Your reputation (ratings, acceptance rate)
    • How many questions you accept and complete
  • Some user reports say tutors regularly make a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars per month if they are consistent.
  • On a Medium blog, one tutor claimed they made $150/day by being selective and efficient.
  • But negative reviews also mention withheld payments, difficult tasks, or commissions eating into earnings.

In short: the earning potential is real, but it won’t be effortless at first. You’ll need to build credibility and learn how to pick the right work.

About Those Earnings

Here at Side Hustle Watch, we strive for transparency and honesty. I’d love to be able to tell you an accurate earnings expectation for Studypool, but I don’t have the data to make such a claim. The real answer is that earnings seem to vary widely for a variety of reasons.

On that note, if you enjoy tutoring, and if the Studypool bid system appeals to you, give it a try!
